Genetic Effects on Bodyfat Loss
There is growing evidence that more than any other basic factor, genetic inheritance influences an individual's chance of becoming fat. A person’s set point is the approximate weight and fat percentage that your body settles into in adulthood.
Bodyfat is actually regulated by the brain's weight-regulating mechanism. This mechanism chooses the amount of bodyfat it considers ideal for the body’s needs and then works to maintain that level.
Theoretically, each person has a set point range determined by genetics. Where you end up in that range is a result of your lifestyle. In other words, if you are active and have good eating habits you will be on the lower side and vice-versa.
Your set point is genetically determined. Some people are happy with their inherited set point while others struggle with it their entire lives.
There are people who are able to eat anything and everything they desire and still maintain a low bodyfat percentage. However, many people struggle with their genetic set point and constantly diet and exercise to lose weight.
If genetic inheritance determines the amount of fat naturally stored, it may play a role in how quickly one is able to lose unwanted bobdyfat.
Two individuals with similar body composition and fat loss goals could participate in the same diet and exercise program and the one with the better “fat loss genes” may reach his/her goal in less time and with less work.
Genetic disposition may therefore have a two fold effect on weight and fat loss. It may determine the amount of bodyfat the system will attempt to store as well as the speed at which the dieter is able to lose it.
